Post, listen, and act — your Instagram on autopilot

SocialMarketingAnalyticsCommunicationAutomation

Instagram for Business is the Meta Graph API surface that lets agents publish photos, videos, carousels, and Reels, monitor comments and mentions, and pull post and account analytics — all without touching the app. Connect it to Actionist and your agent publishes approved content the moment it's ready, replies to comments in your brand voice within minutes, surfaces top-performing posts in a weekly digest, and triggers downstream workflows the second new media or a brand tag appears. You stay in your tool; Instagram stays active.

Tagged post → instant support DM

When a customer tags your Business account in a post, your agent doesn't wait for a community manager to notice — it fetches the tag, pulls the commenter's handle, reads the sentiment of the caption, and fires a personalised DM within 90 seconds. Positive tags get a thank-you with a loyalty discount code; negative tags get an empathetic acknowledgement and a support ticket opened in parallel. The team wakes up to resolved conversations, not a backlog.

Connect

How to plug Instagram for Business into Actionist

Pick the connection method that suits your environment.

The fastest path. Install an Instagram MCP server in one click and the agent reaches your Business account through a permissioned Meta OAuth handshake — no tokens to copy, no API credentials to rotate.

1
Open the Apps tab

Find Instagram for Business in the Apps library and click Connect. MCP is selected by default.

2
Authorise in Instagram for Business

A Meta OAuth window opens — log in with your Business account, grant the required permissions (instagram_basic, instagram_content_publish, instagram_manage_comments, instagram_manage_insights), and confirm. Your Instagram Business account must be linked to a Facebook Page before this step.

3
Test the connection

Actionist runs a read-only call to verify the handshake. You're ready.

FAQs

Questions about Instagram for Business + Actionist

Which Instagram for Business events does the agent support?
Two triggers are live: New Media Posted in my Account (fires when your Business account publishes any photo, video, or carousel) and New Tagged Media (fires when another account tags your Business profile). Both only detect media created after the workflow is activated — pre-existing posts will not trigger a run.
Can the agent publish videos, carousels, or Reels — not just single images?
Yes. Publish Photo(s) handles single images, Publish Video handles standard video posts, Create Reels video publishes short-form Reels, and Create carousel post sequences up to 10 images into one swipeable post. Each action maps to a distinct Graph API publishing flow, so choose the one that matches your content format.
What account setup is required before connecting?
You need an Instagram Business (or Creator) account linked to a Facebook Page. Personal accounts cannot access the Graph API. In Meta Business Suite, make sure the Instagram account is connected to your Page and that you have Admin or Editor permissions on the Page — otherwise the OAuth handshake will succeed but most actions will return permission errors.
Why don't posts made before my workflow was activated trigger a run?
The Graph API media edge returns posts in reverse-chronological order and Actionist records the latest media ID at connection time. Only media with an ID newer than that watermark triggers the workflow. This prevents replaying your entire post history the first time the trigger runs — intentional, not a bug.
How do I avoid trigger loops when the agent publishes a post that itself fires the trigger?
Add a condition step after the trigger that checks the caption or media source for a flag you control — for example, a specific hashtag or a URL prefix only your agent adds. If the flag is present, skip the rest of the workflow. This ensures the agent's own posts don't re-enter the pipeline.
What permissions (scopes) does the agent need?
For publishing: instagram_content_publish and pages_read_engagement. For reading insights: instagram_manage_insights. For comment management: instagram_manage_comments. For DMs: instagram_manage_messages. Grant only the scopes your actual workflows use — the narrower the permission set, the easier it is to get Meta App Review approval if your app is not in Development mode.
Are there rate limits I should know about?
The Graph API applies a platform-level rate limit of 200 calls per user per hour for most endpoints. Insights endpoints have a lower ceiling and are throttled separately. If your workflow polls insights frequently, spread calls across time rather than batching them in a single loop. The agent surfaces a 429 error clearly so you can add a delay node.
What happens if I disconnect and reconnect the Instagram account?
Disconnecting invalidates the stored access token. When you reconnect, a new OAuth token is issued and Actionist resets the media watermark to the current latest post. Any posts published during the gap will not fire historical triggers — workflows resume from the reconnection point forward.
